Knife Gate Valve Design
The GMK Knife Gate Valve features a full-port body, bolted bonnet, and OS&Y outside screw and yoke design. This configuration provides a practical structure for industrial isolation applications.
The valve uses a two-way sealing design for reliable shut-off in both flow directions. In addition, the gate does not require continuous pressure against the seat to maintain the sealing function.
When fully open, the gate moves clear of the main flow passage. Therefore, the valve provides a larger effective flow area and minimizes pressure loss across the valve.
Furthermore, the mechanically retained seat helps prevent seat pullout during demanding operation. The field-replaceable seat also makes maintenance more convenient and reduces service downtime.
GMK Knife Gate Valve Benefits
GMK Knife Gate Valve offers several advantages for industrial applications. Its compact structure and lightweight design can make installation and operation easier.
The valve provides reliable bidirectional shut-off for pipelines carrying slurry and other difficult media. Therefore, it is suitable for applications where dependable isolation is more important than flow regulation.
Another advantage is the easy replacement of the valve seat and sleeve. As a result, maintenance teams can complete routine servicing more efficiently.
Moreover, the full-port passage helps reduce pressure loss when the valve is fully open. This design can support efficient flow while limiting unnecessary energy loss within the pipeline.
The valve can also operate in wet or dry environments when properly selected for the application. Furthermore, its robust construction supports demanding industrial service conditions.
GMK Knife Gate Valve for On/Off Service
Knife gate valves are primarily designed for isolation and on/off service. They should normally operate in the fully open or fully closed position unless specifically designed and rated for throttling service.
Using a standard knife gate valve for continuous flow regulation can increase vibration and wear. Therefore, partial opening should be avoided when the valve is not designed for throttling applications.
Fluid pressure acting against a partially closed gate can cause vibration and accelerate wear on the gate and seat. As a result, proper valve operation can help extend the service life of the sealing components.
The controlled opening and closing action can also help reduce the risk of sudden pressure changes. However, the complete piping system should be evaluated when water hammer is a concern.
Industrial Applications
GMK Knife Gate Valve is suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. It can handle difficult media that may contain solid particles, abrasive materials, or suspended contaminants.
Typical applications include wastewater treatment, slurry handling, mining, chemical processing, pulp and paper, and general industrial piping.
In wastewater systems, the valve can provide reliable isolation where the process medium contains suspended solids. Similarly, slurry applications can benefit from the knife gate design because the sharp gate can cut through thick media.
Moreover, the bidirectional flow design provides installation flexibility for different pipeline configurations. Therefore, engineers can select the valve according to the system layout and operating requirements.
GMK Knife Gate Valve Technical Features
The GMK Knife Gate Valve features a full-port design for increased flow capacity and reduced pressure drop. It also provides true bidirectional flow and shut-off for flexible installation.
The valve is available with an OS&Y outside screw and yoke configuration and a bolted bonnet. Standard open and closed lockout positions are also available for safer maintenance and operation.
The seat is mechanically retained to prevent pullout during service. In addition, the knife gate valve seat can be replaced in the field when required.
The cast super yoke provides a robust support structure for the valve operating mechanism. It also features a top-removal stem nut to simplify maintenance access.
The valve provides two-way zero-leakage shut-off from full vacuum to the rated pressure of 150 psi. However, actual service conditions should always remain within the specified pressure and temperature limits.
